Slash and his mate, having just eaten and mated, wandered onto the road in the Ngorogoro crater. We were stopped watching them when his mate approached our vehicle and lay down in the hopes of shade. There was none, as it was mid-day, and Slash lay down a few meters from her. I couldn't take my eyes off of the huge wound on the face of this magnificent lion. The cut was clearly hurting him, and the flies on it were irritating him, but he playfully rolled around rarely taking his eyes off his mate. I shot for awhile before he finally got all the flies off and you could see how deep and terrible the wound was. Slash paid a high cost for this mating!
